First-place
winner of the 1999 California Landscape Contractors Association
award for residential renovation, San Francisco landscape
architect Jay Thayer replaced the sloping, weed-filled
back yard of this San Francisco house with an outdoor
room ideally suited for dining and entertaining.
The kitchen is in the rear of the house
and it had an old deck that led to the narrow, sloping
lot. Dan Fix Landscape Construction built concrete retaining
walls and filled and leveled the lot to create a natural
flow from from the house. A concrete base was poured
on the now-level lot to support the limestone squares
arranged in diamond-pattern. Classic urns on pedestals
anchor the corners of the limestone carpet.
New fences and trellises draw the eye
up from the concrete foundations to large specimen plantings
of Japanese Maple and boxwood. Gravel walkways surround
the limestone and lead to the horizontal granite fountain.
Water spills smoothly over the flat top to splash on
black Mexican beach pebbles at the base. Beds of ferns
and flowering perennials define seating areas and lend
a sweet fragrance to the festivities.
